The name Hockessin may have been derived from the Lenape Indian word “hokesa” meaning “pieces of bark” or from a misspelling of “occasion” as pronounced by the Quakers who settled the area. Hockessin traces its roots back to 1688. The first Roman Catholic Church in Delaware was located in Hockessin. Missionary priests from Maryland established the Coffee Run Mission in 1790. There are many properties registered on National Register of Historic Places in Hockessin. Hockessin was not much more than a crossroad until the late 1980's when it became very popular. Since 1990 the population has tripled.  Growing up in the area I can remember homes along Valley Road that did not even have indoor plumbing! Now it is a vibrant area known for high quality of life and a diverse community. The median household income is $100,880 in the 2000 census..  National organizations routinely tout Hockessin as one of the nicest areas it Delaware to live.
